Universe Diagram
Universe Diagram. If our sun were the size of that penny, the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, would. The far left depicts the earliest moment we can now probe, when a period of "inflation" produced a burst of exponential growth in the universe. (Size is depicted by the vertical extent of the grid in this graphic.) Diagram of evolution of the (observable part) of the universe from the Big Bang (left), the CMB-reference afterglow, to the present.
The observable Universe (the teardrop-shaped image at the center of the diagram) is only a drop in the bucket compared to the vast expanse of the actual Universe.
Although astronomy is a complex science, these basic terms can be understood by virtually anyone.
Not happy with either the Big Bang or the Steady State theory? The differences between the universe, galaxies and solar systems are at the heart of the science known as astronomy. JPL research on the Structure of the Universe covers a wide array of topics that address understanding the evolution of the universe beginning with the formation of the first galaxies and continuing until the present time.
